What is productivity and why is it important?
Before we move onto the benefits of productivity in business, let’s start by explaining what it even means to be productive.
If you were to look up “productivity” in a search bar, you’re likely going to get a lot of definitions that are primarily aimed towards larger companies or factories. But at its simplest terms, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes it as “a ratio of output over input.”
What This Means for Online Business Owners
At a glance, for online business owners, this translates to how much work you get done in a certain amount of time.
However, this is where many people also go wrong with what it means to “be productive.” This definition makes it seem as if you need to cross as many things off your to-do list in order to have had a productive day, but this isn’t the case.
My definition of productivity means that you’re getting the RIGHT things done in less time. And by “right things”, I mean your priority tasks that are going to get you closer to achieving your goals so that you can grow the online business of your dreams.
Why This Matters
This is important to know because as online business owners, there’s often so many tasks we could do, but if we’re not getting the ones that matter done, we’re simply being busy and not productive, which isn’t what we want.
But we also don’t want to waste our time because as we’ve mentioned, time is our most valuable resource and we must protect it.
So let’s talk about the reasons why increasing your productivity as an online entrepreneur matters and how it’ll benefit you and your business.
9 Benefits of Increased Productivity as an Entrepreneur
Now that you know what it actually means to be productive and why it’s important for you to know this true definition, let’s cover the benefits of increased productivity for you as an online business owner.
Get more done in less time
One of the most obvious benefits of increased productivity is that you can get more done in less time, which leads to higher efficiency.
This means that you’re not wasting time taking longer to complete certain tasks and will allow you to reach your goals sooner, along with the rest of the productivity benefits we’re about to cover.
Reduces your stress and overwhelm
Another benefit of increased productivity is that it can help entrepreneurs to manage stress and overwhelm, while avoiding burnout in the process.
By effectively managing your time and completing tasks more efficiently, you’re not bothered by a never-ending to-do list and you’re even reducing your workload and time at work.
In turn, this lowers your stress levels and can lead to better physical and mental health, instead of working yourself to the ground which is what #hustleculture can tend to make you do.

Increases your energy
Increased productivity has also been shown to increase energy levels in entrepreneurs. By working efficiently and getting more done in less time, you can avoid overworking and depleting your energy levels.
As shown in the previous benefits, you’re able to work less, get more done and reduce your stress – all of which work together to give you more energy.
This can result in a more positive and motivated mindset, and helps you feel better equipped to handle ‘all the things’ your business needs.
Improves your ability to focus
Another advantage of increasing productivity is that it improves your ability to focus. You’ll know how to manage your distractions better and even get to a point where you don’t let them bother you as much.
In addition, by prioritizing your tasks, you’re filtering out other things that don’t need to be done yet which helps you laser in on the ones that you’re working on.
Being more focused also helps enhance the next few productivity benefits too, while reducing mistakes since you’re super concentrated on the task-at-hand.

Supports better decision-making
One of the productivity benefits of being focused is that it also supports better decision-making and problem-solving skills. This is essential for online entrepreneurs as you’re constantly going to be needing to make decisions and solve problems for your business.
In an ever changing online environment, you’ll need this increased capacity for critical thinking so that you can approach challenges with a clear and focused mindset.
And if you have organized business systems that document and keep track of all your information, tasks, data etc., it’ll be even easier to make well-informed decisions quicker.
Gives you space for creative-thinking
Like I mentioned, the online space is constantly changing which means that in order to succeed, you’ll need to have space for creative-thinking.
Feeling negative emotions like stress and overwhelm, blocks your creativity and increases writer’s block too. So when you’re productive and you decrease these negative emotions, you’re opening up your ability to brainstorm fun ideas and come up with new experiments to try in your business.
By encouraging creativity, entrepreneurs can develop exciting and engaging business experiences, stay ahead of industry trends and innovate new solutions, all of which support your business growth.

Improves your time management skills
Another one of the benefits of increased productivity is that you improve your time management skills. This means you basically get more ‘time freedom’ to do what you want.
Improved time management allows you to achieve a better work-life balance so that you’re not always working on your business and you’re able to make time for yourself and loved ones too.
Now, when I say a better work-life balance, I don’t mean an even balance between life and work because that would be unrealistic since our lives have a lot going on, butttt that’s a conversation for another day. Just know that time management is an important skill every business owner can improve on, regardless of your past or background.

Helps you avoid procrastination
Another reason why getting productive is important and beneficial is because it honestly helps you stop procrastinating as much.
Procrastinating can happen whenever you’re not seeing results or getting things done. It can also creep up when you’re unsure about how things are going to go due to not knowing what your task load will look like once you get started. This makes it easy to keep pushing off the task.
However, by avoiding procrastination, you’re also avoiding missing deadlines or causing friction amongst team members who are expecting one thing but don’t receive it. Increasing your productivity will help you experience this less.
Reduces costs and increases profits
Overwhelm costs time and time is money. You may have seen me say this phrase before and that’s because it’s true. Every single productivity benefit we’ve covered so far is helping you save time, reduce costs and increase your business profits at the same time.
Increasing Your Productivity is Worth It
As you see, there are many benefits of increased productivity as an online business owner and they all have a domino effect to create even more advantages.
From the ability to get more done in less time, reduce stress and overwhelm to improving focus, supporting better decision-making, and enhancing creativity, the advantages of increased productivity are nearly endless (and well worth it).
So I definitely recommend focusing on increasing your productivity (even if it’s small bits at a time) so that you can reach your goals faster, grow a successful online business and make an impact through your content and resources sooner.
