What I Was Told When I First Started Online
Hey, welcome back to the Cheerful Productive Chats Podcast. Now, one thing that I see a lot is that business owners, particularly new business owners, feel the need to be on every single social media platform. And, you know what? That was me. That it was me too. And I’ll get to why in just a second.
This is actually one of the things that I mention people not to focus on during your first month of blogging, but it’s true for every type of business owner too.
But like I said, I don’t blame you because I know the feeling. I was there too. The gurus that actually lured me into this online space, particularly blogging, told me that I needed to post on every single social media platform in order to succeed.
But not just that. The recommendation that they gave was a hundred tweets per day. Posting every single day on Instagram and Facebook, plus Facebook ads. I don’t know how many times on LinkedIn and 30 pins per day, along with, you know, other BS recommendations now that I don’t remember.
Now, maybe it’s true that in order to be seen on Twitter, I have to post a hundred tweets per day. And back then, 30 pins on Pinterest was actually normal. But when I was a beginner blogger, like I was, this was the recommendation they were giving inside of a beginner blogger course. Like I had just started.
So what they failed to mention to me was exactly what I’m going to share with you in this episode, because not going to lie.
“Should I be posting on all social media platforms?”
This is a question that I saw recently on the online space, and I have a lot to say about this, especially because I know that there’s people out there that really want you to feel like you have to be everywhere. And so I’m going to give you what my thoughts are on this question.
So should I be posting on all social media platforms? I think you know what I’m going to say to that. My initial answer to this is a flat out no.
No is what I would recommend to a good majority of the people with some being under the exception of it depends, but here’s why.

Top Reasons Why I Don’t Recommend You Post on Every Platform
So here’s the top reasons why I don’t recommend that you post on every single social media platform.
Every platform has their own unique algorithm
So reason number one. Every platform has their own unique algorithm. So cross posting the same content to all of the platforms isn’t really going to cut it, unless you’re actually editing the content in order for it to fit that algorithm’s needs and wants.
You know, they all have different character limits and how many times you should be posting. And at different times of the day, or in different formats. And so you would have to edit every single post in order to make it match what the algorithm wants.
And if you’re not doing that, if you’re just simply cross posting the exact same content across multiple platforms, the algorithm isn’t going to care. Okay. They’re not going to care.
So just because someone follows you on a particular social media platform, it doesn’t mean that your social media posts are going to appear on their feed. Like I know it sucks. But it’s the truth.
Like you would expect that if you have a thousand followers on Instagram, That all of those thousand followers would see your post every single time you post something.
But unfortunately that’s just not how it is. And because of that, you need it to create better content that’s actually tailored for a specific algorithms platform so that way it can be shown to not only the ones who are following you, but new people as well.
Now I want to clarify that I am not by any means saying that you shouldn’t repurpose your content because I 100% think that you definitely definitely should be repurposing.
But what I’m saying is that in order to repurpose your content to multiple social media platforms, you’re going to have to repurpose them and edit them in a way that’s feeding the algorithm what it wants if you actually want your work to be shown to others. Okay. So that is reason number one.
Your people aren’t even on every platform
Reason number two is that your people are not even on every single platform. So depending on what your niche is, some of them might not even be on Twitter or they might not even be on LinkedIn or it might not even make sense.
Maybe they are on that platform, but not for the reason why they’re following you. You know, they might be on LinkedIn because they are, you know, they work in Corporate America, but that’s not why they follow you.
Maybe they follow you for, um, healthy meals for your family. So they don’t expect to see you on LinkedIn, right? They’re on LinkedIn for a different reason, for a different purpose.
So the people that you’re trying to attract might not even be on every single platform. So why do you need to be on every single platform if they’re not even on it?
So, this is where it’s going to be really, really important for you to really figure out the top platforms that they are actually on. Okay. And we’ll actually get to what I recommend in just a second.
So reason number three is that because you’re trying to post and be everywhere, it’s extremely time consuming. It’s even more time consuming when you don’t even like to be on that platform. Why?
Because procrastination kicks in every time we don’t want to do something. And I know because I have felt this way. Whenever I don’t feel like doing something, guess who comes up? Procrastination.
It comes up and it takes over and then you just keep pushing it off, pushing it off, pushing it off, but it’s still on your list. And so when you’re trying to post and be everywhere, it’s already time consuming in itself for all the reasons that I said.
But if you don’t even like showing up to that platform, then it’s going to take you even longer to get that post done. And we all know that our time is super, super limited.
So why are you going to spend it doing things that you don’t even like to do for your business? Like that doesn’t make any sense to me.
Now, because of this, because of what I’m sharing and because you’re still trying to be on a platform that you don’t even like to be on. You’re mentally draining yourself. You’re mentally draining yourself from trying to force yourself to post on this platform that you don’t even like. and that just leads to burnout.
And in episode 10, I’m specifically trying to help you avoid and prevent burnout because it’s not good. So your time could be spent on other tasks that you need to do as a business owner, instead of trying to pull some every single social media platform, when you don’t even like to be on every social media platform.

What I Recommend You Do Instead
So here’s what I recommend instead okay. While there are definitely tools, templates, and even my mini course, Effortless Content Ideas, available that are going to make it easy for you to repost content across multiple platforms, I still recommend that you don’t try to repost it all.
What I recommend is that you post on one or two social media platforms max. learn the algorithm. Get into a good routine of posting on those social media platforms, and then decide if you want, or can add more.
So unless you’re outsourcing your social media content and someone else is taking care of the cross posting and repurposing your content for you, this is what I recommend.
Because as a fellow, only an entrepreneur with limited time, I know that you want to make every single minute count and every single post that you create count. You don’t want anything to go to waste, right.
And while there’s definitely going to be a lot of things in our business that aren’t going to work in our favor, why are you going to purposely put yourself in that situation because you haven’t learned the algorithm and you’re just trying to get it out there everywhere and hope that people are going to see. It’s almost like throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping that it sticks. Right.
You’ve probably heard that saying. That’s essentially what you’re doing when you’re posting on social media platforms without giving the algorithm what it wants.
So I want to make sure that you are actually doing what’s worth your time right now. So bottom line. My answer to the question, do you really need to be on every social media platform? No.
But I do recommend that you pick one or two social media platforms, learn those the best that you can. Repurpose blog posts and long form content that you already have. Turn those into social media content pieces, and then move on to your next important task. Okay.
