Hey, welcome back to the Cheerful Productive Chats Podcast!
It’s been a while. I kind of had a feeling I might take a little break after the last episode, which is why I gave you a heads-up. But I’m back now, feeling great, and excited about the year ahead—despite all the chaos that has been happening in my life lately.
Chaos is inevitable, but that’s exactly why today we’re diving into Mindset Shifts for a Calm, Productive Day. Chaos happens—there’s no avoiding it. It’s something I’ve been talking about a lot with members of my Chaos to Control Secrets experience, where I share behind-the-scenes insights into the chaos I navigate daily and how I adjust my plans and systems to make things work.
There are so many days when it feels like everything is out of control, and your plans go straight out the window. I’ve been there—actually, I’m there all the time. But these three mindset shifts I’m about to share have been true game-changers for me. Let’s dive in!
Mindset Shift #1: Chaos is Inevitable
I’ve already said it, but it’s true: chaos is inevitable. What matters is how you respond to it.
You can’t control the curveballs life throws at you, but you can control how you react. Resisting chaos will only add to your stress, but when you embrace it, accept it, and focus on how to adapt, you’ll be able to handle things more effectively.
For example, just this week, I had to pivot my plans. I usually plan my week on Sunday evenings, but this time, I didn’t get around to it until Monday morning. As soon as I finished planning, I got a call from my in-laws saying they couldn’t take my daughter because someone was sick—for the third or fourth week in a row!
Of course, it was frustrating. I rely on those hours for focused work, and my daughter was excited to see her cousins. But instead of spiraling into thoughts like, “Why does this always happen?” I reminded myself: this is life. It happens. What can I do to adapt?
By maintaining a flexible weekly plan, I was able to shift things around. My Friday, which I had intentionally left open, now had tasks moved into it. That’s the power of embracing chaos—it allows you to adapt without losing momentum.
Mindset Shift #2: Your To-Do List is a Guide, Not a Dictator
Your to-do list is just a guide—it’s not meant to rule your life.
I love having a to-do list for every day, but I also know it’s not set in stone. When chaos strikes, I give myself permission to adjust it. Treating your to-do list as flexible rather than rigid relieves unnecessary pressure and allows you to prioritize what’s truly important.
To-do lists are never-ending. There will always be something new to add, so don’t stress yourself out trying to check off every single item. Focus on the most important tasks for the day, and be okay with reorganizing the rest.
For example, even if you check off 7 out of 10 tasks, that doesn’t necessarily mean you were productive. If the remaining 3 tasks were the most important ones, you didn’t prioritize effectively. Productivity isn’t about crossing off as much as possible; it’s about focusing on what truly matters.
Mindset Shift #3: Every Day Doesn’t Have to Be a Home Run
Not every day will be wildly productive—and that’s okay.
This podcast is all about productivity, but some days just won’t go as planned. That’s life. What matters is not letting those days define you. Instead, focus on consistency over time.
For example, I don’t always show up weekly with this podcast. Between managing my household, my businesses, and the chaos that comes with a full house, there are times when it’s hard to find quiet moments to record. And yet, I still show up. Maybe not perfectly, but I’m consistent.
Even on days when it feels like nothing went right, find the small wins. Did you rest? Did you manage to get one thing done? Celebrate those small victories because they matter.
Recap
To summarize, here are the three mindset shifts for a calm, productive day:
- Chaos is inevitable—focus on your response.
- Your to-do list is a flexible guide, not a rigid ruler.
- Small wins matter—consistency is key.
I encourage you to try just one of these shifts this week and see how it transforms your mindset.
