Feeling Unproductive Isn’t Always a Time or Systems Problem
Productivity is a whole umbrella, and time management or better systems aren’t always the answer. 😅
Sometimes the real reason you’re feeling unproductive is that your season of life shifted… and your systems didn’t shift with it. When that happens, everything starts to feel harder than it should, and it’s easy to blame yourself when that’s not really the problem at all.
The 3 Types of Seasons of Life Every Solopreneur Moves Through
Not all seasons of life look the same, and that’s exactly why they can catch you off guard. Here are the three types you’ll move through as a solopreneur.
Predictable Seasons
These are the ones you can see coming and plan around. They’re the seasons that show up on a calendar or get marked on your project plan. Think:
- School breaks and holidays
- Planned vacations
- Scheduled launches, bundles, or flash sales
Because you can see them coming, you actually have time to shift your systems and routines before they hit. These are the easier ones to prepare for.
Unpredictable Seasons
These are life’s curveballs… the ones that don’t give you a warning or time to prepare. One day everything is fine, and the next your whole plan is out the window. Think:
- A sick kid (or a sick you)
- Unexpected health issues
- A sudden job change or loss
- A flat tire, a power outage, a hurricane headed your way 🤦🏻♀️
You didn’t see them coming, and that’s exactly what makes them so disruptive. There’s no way to fully prep for these, but recognizing them as a season helps you stop blaming yourself when things fall apart.the peace those systems were supposed to bring. You already need them.
Semi-Predictable Seasons
These are the seasons you know are coming but can’t fully plan around because the timing or impact is still unclear. Think:
- Pregnancy
- Your cycle and how it shifts your energy and capacity each month
- A promotion you know is on the horizon but don’t have a timeline for yet
You have some heads up, but the full weight of the season is still hard to prepare for until you’re actually in it.
And here’s the thing about all three: seasons of life can be short-lived or long-term, minor disruptions or life-changing shifts. What matters is knowing how to recognize them when they show up.

The 3 Signals That Your Season of Life Has Shifted
So how do you actually know when your season has changed and your systems need to catch up? There are three things to pay attention to… these are your signals. 👇🏼
Energy
If something felt more sustainable before and now it feels like too much, that’s a sign things need to change. Maybe you’re sleep deprived because of a newborn. Maybe your kid has been sick and you’re up every few hours. Maybe your cycle is affecting how much energy you have on certain days.
If your energy looks different than it did when you first built your routine, your systems probably need to shift with it. And please, don’t feel guilty about it. 🫶🏼
Capacity
This is when things that used to feel easy now feel like a lot, and maybe it’s not that you’re doing more, it just feels like you are. This can be physical, mental, or emotional. A good gut check:
- Did managing three clients used to feel easy, but now one or two feels overwhelming?
- Are you doing the same amount of work but it just feels like more?
If so, pause and look at what else has changed around you. Because sometimes it’s not the work, it’s that your season of life shifted and your capacity shifted with it.
Schedule
This one might be the most obvious. If your actual schedule has changed but your systems haven’t followed, things are going to feel really hard. New responsibilities, new life circumstances, a kid home for the summer instead of at school… all of it changes your available time.
Your systems can only work if they’re built around the schedule you actually have right now.

Your Systems Didn’t Fail You (Your Season of Life Just Changed)
If your routines aren’t working the way they used to, it doesn’t mean you did something wrong. It means your season of life changed. That’s normal. That’s how we grow. 🙌🏼
Stop planning for the life you wish you had.
Create systems for the life you actually have right now. The routines that used to work served you for that season… letting them go isn’t wasted time or effort.
You don’t need to overhaul everything. One step, one routine, one system at a time. 👏🏼

Stop Feeling Unproductive and Start Adjusting to Your Season
Once you recognize that your season of life has shifted, that’s actually enough to start making progress.
You notice where things aren’t working, you make a small adjustment, and little by little things start to flow again. You don’t have to figure it all out at once.
A great place to start is the Weekly Reset GPT. It’s a free tool that helps you pause, reflect on where you’re at right now, and reset for the week ahead. Especially helpful if you’re trying to figure out what didn’t work last week so you can do better this week.
